William Riley Loop1

M, ID# 123, b. 12 October 1862, d. 23 February 1890
  • Obituary*: "Died at Chatfield, Navarro county, Texas, at 2:30 a. m., February 23, 1890, of influenzia [sic], in the 28th year of his age, W. R. Loop, son of W. W. Loop.
"The death of this young man has spread sorrow and regret throughout our village and surrounding country, and our people unite in extending to the bereaved family their heartfelt sympathy and condolence.
"Riley Loop was a noble young man, loved and respected for the noble qualities which united to form his character; he was proverbial for his truthfulness and honesty, and in all his dealings with his fellowmen the measure of the high standard of these God-like virtues was applied to all his transactions. He had no enemies—everybody his friend; and he believed in the common brotherhood of mankind respecting the opinions of those with whom he come [sic] daily in contact. He belonged to church, yet his conduct in life was such that if beyond that mysterious River there is a home, the reward of virtue and honesty and fair dealing, he lives again. He bore his sufferings without murmur, without complaint; and when, after two weeks of suffering, the “final summons” came, peacefully and quietly he closed his eyes in everlasting sleep.
"'Oh! Blindness to the future kindly given,
          That each may fill the place marked by Heaven;
Who sees with equal age as God of all
A hero perish or a sparrow fall.'
"This tribute by a friend is an honest portrayal of his character, a character that many young men emulate, t’would make the world better, and the grand cause of humanity would in no wise suffer. We sympathize deeply with his family in their extreme affliction. A Friend.
       "Chatfield, Tex., Mar. 4, ’90."22
  • Note*: • He did not have children and was known as Riley.
    • Kellie Loop's papers say he died on 22 Feb 1889. The Dallas Morning News announced his death twice, with different dates: First came this item in the 25 Feb 1890 edition: "CHATFIELD, Tex., Feb. 24.—Riley Loop, soon [sic] of W. W. Loop, died yesterday." A week later this item appeared on 3 Mar 1890: "CHATFIELD, Tex., March 2—Mr. Riley Loop, one of the young men of this city, died yesterday." It would seem most likely that 23 Feb 1890 was his death date.25,26

  • Scrapbook*: "FOUR NEGROES IN JAIL AFTER BARN AND AUTO BURNED
"ALLEGED THAT GASOLINE EXPLODED WHILE NEGROES WERE STEALING FLUID
"Four negroes, Rosa Dell Holley, C. H. Harris, Willie Warren and Bill Gibson, were placed in the Navarro county jail in connection with the burning of a barn and automobile of Pleas Halbert at Rice about 3 o’clock Wednesday morning [30 Jul 1930].
"According to Deputy Sheriffs J. M. Westbrook and Jack Floyd who answered the call and tracked the automobile in which the four negroes escaped for eight miles and made the arrests, the negroes have made statements concerning the affair, and three of them state that they entered a shed to take gasoline from a large tank. After about two gallons of gasoline had been extracted from the tank into a bucket, one of the negroes struck a match, the gasoline exploding.
"Holley is suffering from a severely burned arm received in the accident.
"The tracks of the automobile were followed fairly easily due to the rain, the officers said.
"It was estimated that the loss of the car and barn would approximate $2,500.
"The cases were Investigated by the county attorney's office Wednesday morning.
"Formal complaints for alleged arson and burglary were lodged against Holley, Warren and Gibson Wednesday afternoon in Judge S. B. Jordan's court, but C. H. Harris was released. The investigation disclosed that the car used by the negroes belonged to Harris and the arrests were made at the house of Harris, but that he had nothing to do with the case, officers stated."15

  • Obituary*: "Old Resident Dead.
"Mrs. Ann Naudain, aged 85 years died at her home at Chatfield yesterday afternoon at 1 o’clock, and the remains were interred there this afternoon at 4 o’clock. The deceased had no children and had been widowed for several years. She was a sister to the late W. W. Loop of Rice and her deceased husband was a brother of Mrs. Loop. There are a number of relatives in this county, among them, a niece, Mrs. W. M. Harper of Corsicana."15
  • Note*: • Family records do not seem to mention her marriage to James Painter. • Although her obituary in the Corsicana Daily Sun says she did not have any children, a Naudain family history lists a son, Henry Naudain; he died in childhood and thus was not living when she died, and perhaps the Daily Sun meant she had no surviving children.16,17

  • Obituary*: "Lucian Lloyd Loop Died Here Tuesday at Family Home
"Lucian Lloyd Loop, age 80, who had lived in Stamford [Texas] since 1904, died Tuesday [November 8, 1949] at 8:35 a.m. as he sat talking with his wife at the family home. He had been in frail health for several years but his death was unexpected.
"Funeral service was set for Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Stamford Church of Christ, of which Mr. Loop was a member. D.L. Ashley, minister of the Munday Church of Christ, was to conduct the service, assisted by Charles E. Hill, local minister, with burial in Highland cemetery under the direction of Kinney Funeral Home.
"A native Texan, Mr. Loop was born at Chatfield on May 24, 1869. He married Bertha Mae Curtis there on April 4, 1894, and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary here in 1944.
"Mr. Loop was an elder in the Church of Christ and served as president of the school board for a number of years. He was one of the early blacksmiths here and continued his work through the years. He and his wife lived at Chatfield and Rhone, both in Navarro county, for some 10 years before moving to Stamford in 1904.
"He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. A. J. Heflin and Sgt. Etta Hickman, both of Houston, and Mrs. R. L. Howse of Stamford; four sons, R. L. Loop of Houston, Tom of New Orleans, Earl of Odessa and Ben of Stamford; 11 grand-children and two great-grandchildren.
"Also surviving are two sisters; Mrs. Calvin Kinser of Dallas and Mrs. George Garrett of Houston and a brother, Green Todd of Tyler."16
  • Note*: • He was a blacksmith. They were married by Elder Solon Gipson of the Primitive Baptist Church. It is unclear whether his mother was Jane Patterson or Amelia Miller; Amelia is named on his death certificate. He had heart disease and died of myocardial failure.
    • His grave stone includes the inscription, "How empty and lonely our home since you've gone Dear."
    • They moved to Stamford, Texas in 1904. In 1917 their home burned and all they were able to save was a dresser and an old trunk that contained their wedding picture.17,18,19
