Susanne Rochet

F, ID# 1203, b. 13 April 1667, d. circa December 1744
  • Note*: She was named for Suzanne Rondeau, her grandmother and godmother. This interesting story is taken from Gene Carlton Clopton's The Ancestors and Descendants of William Clopton . . . (1984), in which (at p. 237) it is quoted from Baird's Huguenot Emigration to America, Vol. II, Ch. VIII, p. 108 ("The Revocation of 1686"): "From Sedan, France also came Susanne Rochet, who afterwards married one of the French refugees and came to Virginia. Susanne was the youngest of three daughters, the eldest of whom was sixteen years of age at the time of the Revocation 1681-1686. Their home was repeatedly visited by the priests, who questioned the children, seeking to find some occasion for sending them to a Roman Catholic school. At length, their father determined, if possible, to send the eldest daughter out of the Kingdom; and accordingly put her under the care of a niece, who with her infant child, was about to set out for the nearest sea-port, hoping to escape into Holland. On the journey, while crossing a small stream, the mother stumbled on some rocks. The child cried out. A party of soldiers were stationed at a mill near by, and roused by the sound came forth, captured the woman and took them to prison. Her father was finally allowed to bring his daughter home. The second attempt to escape was more fortunate and he succeeded in sending his two eldest daughters to Amsterdam. The youngest, Susanne, was afterwards forwarded to her sisters; concealed in a hogshead, and committed to a friendly sea-captain. The family remained in Holland until after the marriage of the eldest daughter, who removed to the West Indies. Susanne Rochet became the wife of Abraham Michaux, a Huguenot who ultimately settled in Virginia."13,14

William Clopton1

M, ID# 1250, b. circa 1655, d. between 1731 and 1732
  • Note*: It appears that he emigrated from England to York County, Virginia by 1673 and made at least three trips from England. In 1682 he was constable of Hampton Parish in that county. A 1682 deed of gift included "a negro man named Peter and one Black Cow named Blackbird with all her increase" to "my well beloved Daughter Ann Clopton" and "one Bay Mare named Tib, with all her increase and one Brindled Cow named Strawberry, with all her increase" to "my wellbeloved daughter Elizabeth Clopton." By May 1694 William and Ann were in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia, where he was vestryman. He may have continued as such for more than thirty years, for in April 1728 he declined the offer of vestryman "being very aged and not of ability to attend on Vestrys." It appears that he died sometime between 29 Sep 1731 and 29 Sep 1732. "Gent." often appeared after his name, indicating that he was of the gentry. The Clopton family has been described as of artisan stock in England that rose to be part of Virginia's "upper elite" of the late Seventeenth and early Eighteenth Centuries.5,6
