Hoggatt Clopton

  • Obituary*: "HOGGETT [sic] CLOPTON OF ELGIN DIES IN AUSTIN
       "Hoggett [sic] Clopton of Elgin died at a local sanitarium Tuesday morning at 11:30 o'clock, after a brief illness. He was 75 years of age. He was born in Bastrop and lived there for the earlier part of his life, removing to Elgin, where he lived for the last fifty years. He was a Confederate veteran, being a member of Company F, Duff's regiment, Gano's brigage, and serving throughout the war. His father, B. M. Clopton, was an old settler of Texas and came to this state from Tennessee in 1836.
       "Mr. Clopton is survived by a widow, Mrs. Hoggett [sic] Clopton; one son, A. M. Clopton of Elgin, and three daughters, Mrs. R. L. Williams of McDade, Mrs. E. G. Bryan of Sutherland Springs and Mrs. F. Clements of Midlothian.
       "The body was taken to Elgin Tuesday night at 1 o'clock, under direction of Undertaker Weed, and the funeral will be held at 11:30 Wednesday morning, Rev. Mr. Lovett, pastor of the Methodist church, of which Mr. Clopton was a member, officiating."13
  • Note*: On 9 May 1904 he applied for a pension granted by the State of Texas to indigent soldiers or sailors of the "late Confederacy." In it he stated that he was sixty-three years of age; lived in Austin, Travis County, Texas and had lived there for two years; was a carpenter; was in "very bad" physical condition and unable by his own labor to support himself because of rheumatism/ enlisted in the Confederate forces in spring 1863 and served until 1865 in Company F, 33rd Texas Cavalry; owned no real or personal property; had not conveyed any property within two years prior to the application; was "in indigent circumstances . . . that is. . . in actual want, and destitute of property and means of subsistence"; was unable "by [his] labor to earn a support"; had not transferred to others any property of value of any kind for the purpose of becoming a beneficiary under the pension law; did not desert the Confederacy; had been a bond fide resident of Texas continuously since 1 Jan 1880; and was a resident of Texas at the time he enlisted in the Confederate service and the date the pension law was passed (12 May 1899). Attached to the application was a physician's affidavit that stated that "Mr. Clopton by reason of his advanced age nearly 75 together with being a sufferer from rheumatism, is incapacitated from any kind of manual labor." His widow, in her application for a widow's pension, referred to his Confederate Army unit as Co. F of Duff's Regiment.14,9

       "2nd Lt. John B. Lamb, 21, native of Santa Anna, has been awarded the Air Medal and two oak leaf clusters, relatives here have been informed.
       "The pilot of a P-38 fighter plane was born and reared at Santa Anna and after graduating from the high school there in 1939 entered Howard Payne College, Brownwood. He was a student in the Brownwood school when he enlisted in the AAF on Jan. 1, 1942.
       "He received training at Santa Ana, California; Pecos, Texas, and Thunderbird and Williams fields, Arizona, before being transferred to England in February of this year.
       "His mother, Mrs. Melvin Lamb, resides now at 6928 Lovett Street, Dallas.
       "The air medal is given for ‘meritorious achievement’ and oak leaf clusters are given in lieu of presenting additional air medals.”
    •“Word has been received that John Bartlett Lamb, formerly of Santa Anna, has been promoted to first lieutenant. Lt. Lamb is stationed in England and pilots a P-38.”.6,7
  • Note*: He was a first lieutenant in the 430th Fighter Squadron, U.S. Army Air Forces, in World War II. He was shot down over Germany in the last few weeks of the war in Europe.4
