Lt. Gov. James Nathan Browning

M, ID# 5337, b. 13 March 1850, d. 9 November 1921

James Nathan Browning.

  • Obituary*: "FORMER LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR AND PANHANDLE JURIST TO BE BURIED SUNDAY AT AMARILLO
       "Special to The Star-Telegram.
"AMARILLO, Texas, Nov. 10.—Funeral services for former Judge James N. Browning, who twice was Lieutenant Governor of Texas, will be held at 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon in Polk Street Methodist Church here.
"Flags on public buildings were placed at half-mast today in honor of the city’s late distinguished citizen and jurist, who was found dead in bed at his home Wednesday morning. As a tribute of respect, Judge Bishop has adjourned District Court for three days.
"James Nathan Browning, the son of William F. and Mary L. (Burke) Browning, was born in Clark County, Ark., March 13, 1850. His father, having died in 1854, his mother and step-father, Rev. John H. Stegall, moved to Cooke County, Texas, in 1866 and settled near, where the town of Woodbine is located. Pushing farther west in 1867, young Browning engaged in the cattle business in Stephens County, which he followed for nine years, he and his brother, J. A. Browning, becoming large ranchmen, owning and controlling many thousands of cattle. During these stirring times the Indians committed many depredations throughout the country, killing many ranchmen and driving off cattle and horses.
"Being of a literary turn of mind the quieter and more studious life of the professional man appealed strongly to him and he began the study of law under C. K. Stribling, yet living at the age of 76 [unclear; may be 75], at Fort Griffin, Shackelford County. His earliest effort to serve the public was rewarded by his election as Justice of the Peace at Fort Griffin, where he was admitted to the bar in April, 1876. At the same place, in 1876, Browning married Miss Cornelia E. Beckman, who bore him a son and daughter, and died in 1878, and he afterwards married Miss Virginia L. Bozeman.
"He was chosen county attorney of Shackelford County in 1877, which office he held until 1880, when he resigned and with his family moved to the then almost unknown Panhandle of Texas in 1881, settling first at Mobeetie, Wheeler County. In 1888 he moved to Clarendon, Donley County.
"In 1881 the Legislature created the old Thirty-first Judicial District, comprising the entire Panhandle country and he was, without solicitation, appointed by Governor O. M. Roberts to serve as district attorney.
"He resigned in the Spring of 1882 and was elected in the same year to the Eighteenth Legislature, as Representative of the Forty-third District, which comprised sixty-nine counties.
"In 1896 he moved with his family from Clarendon to Amarillo and in 1898 he secured the nomination by the Democratic party and was elected Lieutenant Governor, making a personal canvass of the State. He was re-elected in 1900.
"Among other positions of honor, he served four years during Governor Lanham’s administration, as a member of the Board of Regents of the University of Texas. In 1906, he was elected Judge of the Forty-seventh Judicial District and served two terms. Since his retirement, he has been actively engaged in the practice of law in Amarillo."13
  • Note*: He was known as "Honest Jim." He was elected lieutenant governor of Texas for two terms, from 1899 to 1903, and served as a regent of the University of Texas from 1903 to 1907.14,15
