Lt. Gov. George Taylor Jester

M, ID# 10406, b. 23 August 1846, d. 19 July 1922

Lt. Gov. George T. Jester, from Navarro County Genealogical and Historical Web Site.
  • Note*: He worked for fifty cents a day on the crew that built the Navarro County courthouse, attended school occasionally, read law, and then in 1865 joined the Fourth Texas Regiment of Hood's Brigade but failed to reach his regiment before the Civil War ended. Returning to Corsicana, he bought and traded hides, clerked in a dry-goods store for $20 a month beginning in 1867, bought and shipped cotton (as a "merchandiser") during the 1870's, bought land, raised dairy cattle and cottonseed, and then went into banking with his two brothers in 1881 in what became the Corsicana National Bank in 1887. He was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1890 and the Texas Senate two years later, and was elected lieutenant governor of Texas in 1894 and 1896. He resumed his banking career after leaving office in 1898. He was a Methodist and was one of the founders of Southern Methodist University. One source says he was born in 1847. He died at his home in Corsicana.7,16,6

Orange Walker

M, ID# 10417, b. November 1829, d. 1 January 1901
  • Note*: One source gives November 1820 as his birth date. Another source states that he was born in 1820 and died in 1900. In 1851 he moved from Simpson County, Mississippi to Rankin County, Mississippi, where an uncle, Richard Walker, lived. His first wife, Mary Felts, died about nine months after they married, and about fifteen months later Orange married her sister, Martha. They moved to Louisiana in 1860 but left his and Mary's son, John, with his paternal grandparents, who provided him with a medical at Vanderbilt College. Orange enlisted as a private in Company I, 3rd Louisiana Cavalry, in New Orleans on 17 May 1861 and was discharged a year later, on 2 Jun 1862, at Camp Ingraham, Mississippi, after which he returned to his home in Jackson Parish, Louisiana. He and Martha moved by 1870 to near Gilmer, Upshur County, Texas, where they lived the rest of their lives. One source says that he died on 14 Jan 1901. Pictures of Orange Walker, one with wife Martha ca. 1885, appear between pages 218 and 219 of Anderson, Mullinnix, and Harkins, comps., A Genealogical Record for the Descendants of Lt. Isaac Walker and Elizabeth Stuart (1995).11,12,13
