His body and those of the other forty-two men and officers aboard the S-4 were not recovered until 6 Jan 1928 because of high winds and rough seas.3

George Clinton ('G.C.' or 'Clint') Callaway1

  • Note*: He and his first wife, Martha Rawlins, were first cousins. In 1861 he was captain of a local militia, which in Oct 1862 was mustered into the Confederate Army, in which he served as a second lieutenant. The unit surrendered at New Orleans in 1865, and he was paroled at Alexandria, Louisiana on 7 Jun 1865. He grew a beard during the war, vowed not to shave if the South lost, and kept his beard after war's end. He operated a general store in Howard County, Missouri after the war and moved in 1869 to Rockwall County, Texas. He farmed there and lived the rest of his life there or in Dallas County, Texas.4
