She attended a one room schoolhouse through the eighth grade and then moved to Onawa, Iowa to attend high school. After high school she moved to Kansas City for business school. After graduation, she worked for the American Red Cross and then at the North American Aviation plant in Kansas City, Kansas, which produced B-25 aircraft for World War II and where she met her future husband, Dan, who was serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps and working at the plant as a production facilitator.²
